No Keystone XL Pipeline
Join us, next week in Great Falls, MT, in defending our planet from the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. We won the first two rounds, jousting with the tRump attorneys, October 2017 and February 2018. Now comes the Summary Judgment hearing. May positive, protective actions prevail.

May 24, Thurs: Summary Judgment Hearing, Great Falls, U.S. District Court, 10:00 a.m.
North Coast Rivers Alliance (NCRA, based in Fairfax, CA) in partnership with Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN, out of Bemidji, MN) are the lead plaintiffs in a suit to stop the proposed KXL. Attorney Steve Volker, one of the West’s foremost environmental lawyers, is arguing the case on our behalf.
I’ve been on the NCRA board for eight years, working with members and president Frank Egger. Frank and I began working together to save rivers during the 1973 Stanislaus campaign. My friend Bill Whitehead, who’s an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes, joined NCRA’s board last year. He’ll be a speaker at next Wednesday’s Rally. In addition to a long record of meaningful accomplishments, including stints in the U.S. Army and the Montana State Legislature, Bill is currently chairman of the board of the Assiniboine & Sioux Rural Water Supply System, and he lives in Wolf Point, just downriver from where the proposed pipeline would cross the Missouri River. Bill and I met in 1992, when, as Jerry Brown for President delegates, we attended the Democratic National Convention in Madison Square Garden.
This suit—to banish further thoughts of a pipeline carrying crude oil tar sands from Alberta through fragile and sustaining lands and waters inhabited by abundant earthly beings—is fortuitously strong on plaintiffs, including Northern Plains Resource Council, Bold Alliance, Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Earth, Natural Resource Defense Council, and the Sierra Club. NCRA and IEN are designated as the lead plaintiffs because we were the first to file.
